Ego 2.0. is a 2020 American computer- animated adventure comedy film produced by Columbia Pictures and Megamation and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film serves as a sequel to Ego. The film is directed by Grant Gordon and Jon Godley from a screenplay by Mark Peyton, Tim Kelly and, Erica Rivinoja. The film stars the reprised roles of Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bill Hader, Amy Poehler,and Craig Robinson, alongside new additions Alec Baldwin, Maya Rudolph, Danny McBride, Ben Schwartz, Thomas Middleditch, Kristen Stewart, Dave Bautista, Lil Rel Howery, and Joel McHale. The film was released simultaneously in theaters and on premium video-on-demand on August 7, 2020. It grossed $29.7 million dollars at the box office against its $110 million dollar budget. The film was met with positive reviews with critics praising its animation and humor.

Ego and his friends set out on a journey to find Ego's parents who are lost in the jungle. But Evo's former rival, Steven Steamsmore is out to stop them. With the help of a steampunk tribe, they must fight back and save Gear Valley from being destroyed.

On April 2016, Megamation president Julie Mitchell announced development on a sequel to Ego.

Production on the film began in March 2017.

Casting[edit | edit source]

On May 2019, it was announced that most of the cast of the first film would be reprising their roles, with Alec Baldwin, Maya Rudolph, and Danny McBride cast in undisclosed roles.

On September 2019, it was announced that Ben Schwartz, Thomas Middleditch, Dave Bautista, Lil Rel Howery, Kristen Stewart, and Joel McHale cast in undisclosed roles.

The film was previously scheduled to release June 5, 2020. On April 3, 2020, the film was moved to August 21 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 22, 2020, the film was moved to August 7, 2020 and set to release simultaneously in theaters and premium VOD.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 76% based on 95 reviews; the average rating is 6.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "While its story lacks, Ego 2.0.'s stunning visuals and off-the-wall humor make it a strong update that keeps fans of the first film satisfied." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating, the film has a score of 68 out of 100, based on 45 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale.
