Puyo Puyo (ぷよぷよ) is an American-Japanese animated television series based on the video game series of the same name. The series premiered on Gingo on July 3, 1999 and ended on May 6, 2000. The series only lasted for 2 seasons and 50 episodes and was cancelled due to low ratings. It is the second Gingo television series to be based on a video game, the other series being Niz Chicoloco.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The series takes place on a remote island like Puyo Puyo Sun, it focuses on the adventures of Arle playing Puyo against other characters and trying to defeat the Dark Prince, season 1 takes place after the events of Puyo Puyo Sun, while season 2 takes place after the events of Puyo Puyo~n.

When the Magic Academy and the Witch Academy clash, it's Team Magic vs. Team Witch in a battle of the Sorcery Olympics, in which the Dark Prince goes into some training coach persona known as "Drake Princeton". But, who will win the Sorcery Olympics, will it be Team Magic or Team Witch?

One night at the Forest of Many Bugs, Nohoho tells his four shopkeeper buddies (Momomo, Fufufu, Parara, and Pakista) of a secret recipe of curry that contains a secret ingredient known as "Lemon-Soaked Daikon". When Arle's trusty pet Carbuncle tries Nohoho's curry recipe in Nohoho's store, the curry recipe becomes so addictive, that everyone wants to try it out. Later, the Dark Prince is about to buy Nohoho's latest invention known as the "Curry-Blast-O-Nator 3000 Beta" that contains his curry recipe for $1,000,000 but Arle comes and divulges the secret ingredient, only for a Puyo-popping battle between her and Nohoho to start.

When Draco Centauros orders lots of dragons from a dragon farmer, things take a rather scaly turn in Madou Island. Also, certain characters from Compile's Jump Hero series make an appearance in this episode.

The residents of Madou Island fight over a magic lamp that summons a wish-granting genie (who is apparently Jarne's relative), and when it ends up getting stolen, everyone in town becomes a prime suspect. Meanwhile, Schezo Wegey tries to warn Incubus about his womanizing demeanor, only for things to go rather bizarre.

When a practical joke gets passed on to one another in Madou Island (all thanks to Archan), one led to Cockatrice's injury, thus angering him. Meanwhile, Nasu Grave tries to go on a date with Scylla.

Mamono was hired by the Dark Prince and was given one task: Find Arle and bring her to him. However, Mamono has a hard time looking for Arle, until Arle shows up and challenges Mamono to a Puyo-popping duel!

One day, Arle and Carbuncle discover the Valley of Carbunnies, a place where there are multiple yellow rabbit-like creatures known as "Carbuncles". Upon hearing this, the Dark Prince disguises himself as one of those Carbuncle creatures in order to fit in with them.

Arle discovers that the Puyos have liquid that tastes like a certain fruit depending on the color (for example, the red Puyo's liquid tastes like cherry). After learning about this new discovery, it has evolved into a new drink known as "Puyo Juice", in which the Dark Prince wants to make counterfeit Puyo Juice. A turquoise Puyo brings Arle and Carbuncle to a factory to see that the Puyos the Dark Prince collected are being mistreated by Demisurf (one of the Dark Prince's comrades (and a hyper-competent one at that, way more competent than the rest of the Dark Prince's comrades, and even the Dark Prince himself!). Arle frees the Puyos and competes in a Puyo Puyo match against Demisurf.

Arle was blamed for something she didn’t do, but who actually did that? Why, a foolish and mischievous doppelgänger who looks like Arle. Can the others search for this Arle doppelgänger when they can? Will Minotauros trust the real Rulue or a Rulue doppelgänger? And most importantly, how many doppelgängers are around to fool anyone else?
